Its Time to Build Your Own Table

Updated: Mar 12

Beyoncé said it best if you can't have a seat at the table, then it's time to build your damn table.

Seven years ago, I started playing around with the idea of starting my own consulting business. I was confident in my knowledge and expertise but scared about taking the risk. Then I just got tired, and you know, when a woman is sick and tired, there's no changing our minds, so I left corporate healthcare to start my own consulting company, Connected Consultants. Our mission is to amplify the voices of women and people of color. One of the best ways you could do that is through entrepreneurship. It has been a long journey to where we sit today.

When I started my business, I was all gung ho because I had this fancy MBA, and I thought I knew everything. That's a joke! Thankfully, that knowledge gave me background on business plans and legitimizing the business. Only going through the journey to entrepreneurship would teach me a couple of things.

  1. Perfectionism is your enemy! The biggest challenge I continue to address is that I can do it all. That mindset causes way more harm than good. The fact of the matter is we can't do everything. The most intelligent people are those who surround themselves with other smart people. I'm not always the expert. And in healthcare consulting, you must find the right person to fill in the gaps. Don't be afraid to outsource tasks. Focus on what's in your wheelhouse and let others do the same.

  2. Self-care is your best friend. Healthcare consulting takes much work, but it's also gratifying. Make sure that you are taking care of yourself and doing the things you enjoy. One of the reasons why we start businesses is for flexibility. Then we get caught up in the same rat race of working long hours. Don't forget you are the owner. You approve your days off. You are in control of your balance. So take the trip. Spend more time with your family. Do whatever brings you peace. This positions you to have longevity in this consulting game.

My message today is, yes, build your table. But understand that it doesnt require perfection, and make sure you enjoy your seat at the table.
